Paddling Trails |
Fort Desoto Fort Desoto already receives plenty of press as one of the best beaches in the country. I'd also classify it as one of the best destinations for kayaking. It has great facilities (kayak rentals, restrooms, plenty of parking, and concession stands), multiple places for launching, proximity to Egmont Key and abundant wildlife. However, it's most important asset is versatility. You can go paddling there no matter what the weather, tides or time of year. If it's calm, an intermediate level paddler can take off into the Gulf for a circumnavigation of the park or paddle over to Egmont Key. If the wind has picked up, the weather is threatening or you just want to paddle a few miles, you can paddle through the sheltered keys of the park in relative calm. To give you an idea of some of the options, I've created a map of some of the put-ins & take-outs I like in the Fort Desoto Park.
